A drift study of vertical distribution and mortality of Engraulis anchoita eggs and larvae. OceanDocs
Sánchez, R.P.; de Ciechomski, J.D.; Lasta, C.A.; Guerrero, R.A..
Lagrangian changes in distribution and survival within an anchovy egg and larvae patch were studied by means of multiple opening/closing sampling following a free drifting buoy. The buoy was equipped with a radar reflector and flashing light, and it was connected to a current cross drogue floating at 15 m depth, which corresponded to the main egg and larvae concentration within the patch. The drifter was launched on the Buenos Aires continental shelf, off Necochea during the spring spawning peak of 1983. Three discrete depths (within, below and above the thermocline)were repeatedly sampled close to the drogue with a Motoda sampler. Egg and larval abundances in the vicinity of the drogue were monitored at 3/4 hour intervals for a period of three days. Each...

Perrotta, R.G.; Guerrero, R.A.; Carozza, C.R.; Quiroga, P.; Macchi, G.J..
Samples were obtained using bottom trawl nets during a coastal research cruise carried out on board of the RFV “Dr. E. L. Holmberg” between 3rd. and 16th. July 2001. The spatial distribution of surface and bottom temperature and salinity fields was analyzed at the oceanographic stations sampled in each trawl position. The analysis allowed to characterize the oceanographic conditions of the area during the sampling period and to compare them to the historic seasonal mean. 669 leatherjack specimens of 9-55 cm total length (TL) caught at depths ranging 5-29 m and 1,372 butterfish individuals of 6-40 cm total length (TL) caught at depths ranging 4-29 m were sampled. Length at first sexual maturity for both sexes was also estimated. Results were: leatherjack:...

JAMARC-INIDEP joint research cruise on Argentine short-finned squid Illex argentinus. January-March 1997. OceanDocs
Brunetti, N.E.; Ivanovic, M.L.; Rossi, G.R.; Elena, B.; Benavides, H.R.; Guerrero, R.A.; Blanco, G.; Marchetti, C.; Piñero, R..
The distribution, abundance and population structure of Illex argentinus in relation to the oceanographic conditions during summer 1997, were analyzed as a result of the research cruise carried out by R/V Shinko Maru No.3 on the Argentine shelf (39-50°30'S). Besides, abundance and biological features of Ommastrephes bartrami are analyzed. The main activities carried out during the cruise included jigging operations, tagging (only for I. argentinus) and biological sampling. In addition, meteorological and oceanographic data were collected. A total of 30,2000 individuals were tagged and released. The recapture rate was 0.156. (47 recoveries/30,200 released), considerably higher than that of 1996 (0.030; 4 recoveries/13,191 released). I. argentinus was...

La caballa (Scomber japonicus) y las condiciones ambientales en el area bonaerense de El Rincón (39°- 40°30' S), agosto 1996. OceanDocs
Perrotta, R.G.; Madirolas, A.; Viñas, M.D.; Akselman, R.; Guerrero, R.A.; Sánchez, M.F.; López, F.; Castro Machado, F.; Macchi, G.J..
In August 1996 acoustic methods were employed to estimate mackerel (Scomber japonicus) abundance in the Buenos Aires, Argentina shelf area of "El Rincón" (4,287 mn2), located between 39°- 40° 30' S. Results showed a biomass estimate of 77,260 t. ASIMRAD EK-500 equipment operated with a 38 KHz split-beam transducer was used. Midwater fishing trawls were employed to identify echotraces and to collect mackerel samples.Trawls 4 and 5 were the most successful. Samples included only adult fish (310-470 mm Lt and ages ranging 2-11). Length and weight growth parameters and mortality rates were estimated. Analysis of the stomach contents revealed that mackerel was feeding exclusively on zooplankters over 2 mmlength. The analysis of the characteristics (dimensions...

Masas de agua en la plataforma continental OceanDocs
Guerrero, R.A.; Piola, A.R..
The current knowledge on the argentine continental shelf water masses is summarized in this paper. These water masses are characterized as a function of water types fed by the boundary currents and the modifications due to continental runoff, and water energy exchange with the atmosphere. Based on sea surface salinity distributions and the temperature-salinity characteristics, three masses are described: coastal waters, mid-shelf waters and slope waters. The main freshwater sources found along the coast are identified, as well as high salinity formation areas. The vertical stratification, mainly controlled by temperature, is analyzed along the annual cycle. The stratification cycle is mainly driven by the heat exchange between the atmosphere and the ocean....

Oceanografía física del estuario del Río de la Plata y el sistema costero de El Rincón. Noviembre, 1994 OceanDocs
Guerrero, R.A..
Using the CTD data obtained on the R/V Dr.E.L.Holmberg fishery research cruise H-13/94 (November 1994), oceanographic conditions of the coastal area of the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone (AUCFZ) and El Rincón (Buenos Aires Prov., Argentina) are described. Two physical environments were differentiated: the Río de la Plata estuarine systems and El Rincón coastal regime. In both systems thermal and haline fronts that affect the distribution of reproductive concentrations, nursery and spawning areas of coastal species, are identified. Salinity fields of the AUCFZ, as a function of statistical winds, are synoptically analyzed. In El Rincón, the temporal stability observed on temperature and salinity allowed to describe the mean physical conditions for...

Oceanographic conditions at the southern end of the argentine continental slope OceanDocs
Guerrero, R.A.; Baldoni, A.G.; Benavides, H.R..
The characteristics of the upper Antartic Intermediate water (AAIW) entering the Southern Atlantic are described on the base of oceanographic data collected from four late austral winters (1978-1980-1994-1995). The upper 500 meters regime along the shelf break and around Malvinas Islands (48° to 55° S) is analyzed. In particular, the 1994 horizontal distribution of temperature, salinity and density was mapped in order to show the extreme winter pattern of these parameters. Three salinity sections crossing the water flow direction in the Malvinas Channel (South to the islands) were selected to describe the vertical stratification 1995 and 1995. Horizontal and vertical distribution of chlorophyll a from the 1995 cruise is presented as reference data,...
